FEATURES

A previous Trail ‘Best in Test’ winner, the Osprey Exos 48 boasts an excellent low weight of 1146g, combined with an Airspeed back system that holds the pack away from the wearer for more airflow. The body has a single main compartment, with a removable lid, so you can use an in-situ cover to protect the opening. Compression straps, side stretch pockets and a front stash pocket are provided, but no rain cover. 5/5

FIT

There is no women’s specific version, but this pack comes in sizes S, M and L. The Exoform harness has perforated foam that moulds to the body, so the rucksack can shape to your body contours more easily than some designs. The top tensioning straps on the shoulders allow the body of the pack to be held close to the torso. Overall the fit is good. 4/5

COMFORT

The harness is very soft and not very stiff, so the Osprey Exos 48 tends to mould to the body shape rather than sit on the body. This can make heavier loads less comfortable, but for most loads this works fine. The airflow across the trampoline-style back helps to let sweat evaporate, as does the airflow through the hipbelt and shoulder straps. Overall this hugs the body and feels comfortable. 5/5

IN USE

I’ve used the earlier version of this pack since 2009 and loved it for hillwalking. It is slightly less durable than some heavier packs, and perhaps not quite as supportive of heavier loads, due to the softness of the hipbelt. The lid can be raised or removed and this works well (I prefer a fully attached design). The compression straps and stretch pockets are all great. 5/5

VALUE

This remains the same price as it was in 2015 and is well-priced for what it offers, compared to rival packs. 4/5

VERDICT

The Osprey Exos 48 is a great hillwalking sack for those wanting a combination of low weight and comfort. It won Trail’s ‘Best in Test’ accolade. 4.6/5
