Blaze Trails isn’t just a walking group – it’s a movement empowering parents, grandparents, and carers to connect, build community, and support their well-being through outdoor adventures.

One of its newest groups has launched in the north-west Lake District, led by Katherine Dombrowsky, a local mum of two and qualified Mountain Leader. The Cockermouth-based group has already made its mark by offering parents and carers an opportunity to explore the fells with their little ones, all while building connections and confidence along the way.

With its ethos of making outdoor activities accessible to families, Blaze Trails is helping to redefine early parenthood as a time to be embraced and enjoyed in nature. Often, new parents can feel isolated, especially when adjusting to life with a newborn. Blaze Trails recognises that getting outside, even after a sleepless night, can be a powerful antidote to the stress and anxiety that can accompany having young children.

An idea is born

“I wanted to make the most of my maternity leave and get out hiking,” says Katherine, who started the group during her second maternity leave. “We’re really lucky to live where we do with gorgeous fells and lakes on our doorstep.

“When you’ve had a bad night of sleep and been up several times feeding the baby, it can be really easy to not leave the house, but I never regret getting outside with my little one. The opportunity to make new friends while the babies enjoy some fresh air or nap in the carrier is brilliant. It really feels like I’m doing something positive for my own mental and physical health.”

“OUR WALKS CREATE A SAFE SPACE FOR NEW PARENTS TO CONNECT”

This sentiment is shared by many parents in the group. Since its inception, Katherine’s Lake District group has tackled local favourites like Latrigg, Binsey and Rannerdale Knotts with Cat Bells next up, walking to serene tarns and alongside beautiful lakes.

With an average of eight parents joining per outing, the group has braved rain, wind and sunshine, always walking at a pace that suits the slowest member, taking time for feeding, changing nappies, and of course, snapping photos of their adventures. The inclusive ethos ensures equipment isn’t a barrier, with baby carriers and waterproofs available to borrow.

Confidence through community

“Despite really enjoying hiking before having my baby, I wouldn’t have had the confidence to get back out on the hills carrying him without Blaze Trails,” says first-time mum Caroline. “Getting out of the house into the fresh air, stretching the legs, and chatting to other mums is something I really look forward to each week, even when it’s raining!”

This support extends beyond the walk itself. For parents who may have recently relocated, like Rachel, the group has been invaluable in making friends and finding a sense of community: “We recently moved to the north Lakes, a completely new place for us.

The Blaze Trails Cockermouth walks have been great for meeting other mums, and for being able to get outside and enjoy exploring some of our new local area. Everyone has been really friendly and welcoming!”

Nationwide support

Founded by parents for parents, Blaze Trails has grown to support over 60 parent and baby walking groups nationwide. Each group operates with the same principles: inclusivity, support, and the belief that every parent deserves access to the benefits of nature.

The health and well-being benefits of getting outdoors are well documented, from improved mental health to enhanced physical fitness.

Blaze Trails is more than just a walk. It’s a lifeline for parents navigating the often isolating journey of early parenthood. Walks often finish at a café with cake and more chat, and parents leave with new friends, shared experiences, and a renewed sense of confidence.

For some, it’s a chance to rekindle a passion for the outdoors; for others, it’s the first time they’ve ever tackled a trail with a baby in tow.
